Fuel
Storage Tanks
Fuel storage tanks are containers that hold different fuels and
liquids. You can find containers that hold gas, others hold
petrol (fuel), and some contain paraffin another source of
fuel.
Most of these are mobile fuel storage tanks, which are used to move
fuels from one location to another. Another type of fuel
storage
tank would be one that stores fuels in a fixed place, either above
ground or underground.
The above ground fuel storage tanks
are often constructed from a different material from a storage tank
that is underground, and each have their various specifications and
regulations pertaining to each one set out by different government
bodies around the world.
The different types of storage
tanks can be very varied, many people are familiar with seeing
horizontal and vertical cylindrical shapes, but there are others that
are opened topped, closed topped, cone bottomed, flat bottomed, dish
bottomed and slope bottomed. Some tanks are mounted on a
truck or
articulated trailer, when these storage tanks are mounted on a truck
/articulated trailer then they are called tankers.
The
materials used for above ground storage tanks and underground storage
tanks differ, they are also rated for the different types of fuel
stored, some fuels are more corrosive than others therefore they need
more care and attention when stored as well as material that will not
corrode. The basic design of storage tanks have not
changed
much over the past 50 years, except for upgrade in the quality of
material used to ensure greater safety for long term storage.
Some
storage tanks require special coating of corrosion resistant material
to help prevent corrosion, making use of these corrosion resistant
protective layers does not mean that one must just forget about the
tanks, regular checks and maintenance is also an important part of
ensuring that the fuels stored are safe at all times. Storage tanks
often last between 10 and 20 years, this often depends on the type of
fuel that is stores whether it is corrosive or not. In order
to
ensure the longest lifespan of fuel storage tanks,
constant vigilance
for problems is important.
Many homes use oil storage
tanks for heating purposes. Some are above ground and others are
underground. Other types of fuels are gas storage tanks for LPG gas. It
is imperative that these tanks are maintained on a regular basis and
should there be a leak, that it is notified to the relevant authorities
and repaired as quickly as possible. Any leakage whether it
is a
home fuel storage tank or business fuel storage tanks, the homeowner or
business owner have a responsibility to see that there are no dangerous
leaks that could damage the environment or pose a health risk.
When
buying fuel storage tanks it is important that you check the type of
material that the tank is made of as well as the type of fuel that can
be stored in the tank. If you are not sure what type of tank
suits a particular type of fuel, then consult with your local
government or a person who specializes in fuel storage tanks.
